Inside
The main focal point of the image is the stack of books that are placed centre of the shot. Shape can be found within the photo in the form of differently sized books. The books themselves consolidate to form a unique shape displaying jagged edges and disproportionate layers. Various coloured books have been chosen to highlight form, layers and to contrast the white background. The vibrant red acts as a central focal point which draws the eye immediately. Despite the violent red, the overall piece creates a peaceful mood. A uniform horizon line has been positioned 3/4 vertically. The effect of this is the form of the object is further exploited, the darker background highlights the object siting on a now clearly visible horizontal surface. This image uses natural light to in order to create the peacefully neutral mood. The soft shadows paired with the subtle lighting creates a stagnant image unaffected by direction time or location. The focus is shifted to the books solely.
I used the natural lighting of the sun to create a flair in my picture which also illuminates the bottle. This works because it illuminates the bottle highlighting all its curves as well as creating reflections on many parts of the bottle. I have used exposure to make the bottom of the bottle dark to emphasize the rounded top and flair. The details on the bottle are turned into silhouettes via the illumination of the whole bottle by the sun. This shot has been made to represent the morning time of day since the sun is low just above the horizon meaning it is visible at eye level so it can be captured with other objects in the shot. To make this shot better i need to include more items such as a plant or a small cup, this would help to further convey the time morning as well as take up some of the blank space on the shelf. I could also experiment with the vase putting different objects or liquids in to try capture the light in a different way.
Leading Lines
I have used the leading lines to convey a message in this picture, i have used a window to shine bright concentrated light onto the end of the rails highlighting them as well as making a bright flash towards the end of the track. I have blurred the start of the rails to draw focus from the bottom to the top of the picture, this means the focal point is in the centre as your eyes follow the rail down to the light. I intended for this picture to represent journey, the leading lines in the picture lead you from the blurred beginning to the final destination which is bright through the use of over exposure. I have placed the track on a dark muted table to make sure the focal point is the track and metaphorical journey not the surroundings of the track. This picture is in similar style to Christopher Thomas' pictures which express abandonment and isolation via the use of a single man made item placed in an open area drawing all focus to the single item.
Window World
The focal point of the image is the recast silhouette of the window on the wall. Another focal point would by the centre line created by the converging walls, this acts as a centre line splitting the two worlds of the outside and the inside. The shape of the window is mirrored by the the sun and almost symmetrical, other rectangular objects can be found such as the two picture frames. Gentle oranges illuminate the room, other colours such as grey can be observed through the window. The mood that's initiated is a feeling of tiredness, the distinct lack of vibrant colours invokes fatigue. One object that draws the eye is the landscape image hung from the wall. This object brakes the conforming shapes and symmetry cast from the window; making it draw attention. The location is an almost empty room. The room is in contrast to the detailed outside world. Emptiness inspires the eye to seek interest that is unfound in the room, the window acts as the freedom and interest the viewer is looking for. Lighting plays an important role in the construction of the piece since the natural light is cast onto the wall mirroring the window. The sunsetting activates emotions like tiredness because we associate that time of day with winding down to go to bed.
This photograph has been taken in a way to capture the theme isolation and abandonment. To make this theme i used low light and shadows, the dim light shining on the coats helps to create this effect. I chose all the coats to be hung up to make it seem like they had just been left by the owner of the home quickly. I am pleased with the way the photograph has presented an abandoned home. To improve I would have to find a better location to create the abandoned effect like a field, wood or ocean.
Look up
I have tried to capture the feeling of wonder in the centre picture by having nothing but bamboo in the shot meaning you have nothing else to focus on. The tall and dense bamboo helps create the feeling that you are lost in a distant land since large bamboo is not native to the UK. I have used the light to overexpose the background which perfectly highlights the bamboo which is the focal point of the picture, the small bits of light radiating through the bamboo adds to the theme of wonder since you are in a place with little natural light that is dense and confusing if you walked into forest of bamboo.
Close up
The focal point in this image is the stylus traversing the grooves of the vinyl record. Line has been used to convey shape, this can be observed in the circular lines of the vinyl record. The white stylus contrast the shiny black vinyl drawing focus to the point in which the stylus and vinyl meet. The grooves display a unique texture excellent for photographing since the grooves get incrementally smaller the closer you look. This also provides a unique pattern due to the changing depth of the grooves. The images mood is one of focus and detail, the close up allows the viewer to observe the technology behind how the music is played, instead of the music its self. Attention is immediately drawn to the stylus because of its central positioning and rectangular shape compared to the natural flow of the vinyl. Form is highlighted by the close up, this technique is required in order to expose the objects form since the grooves are so small. Lighting is another way in which form and texture have been exposed. The natural light cascades across the vinyl highlighting the different depths of the grooves and generating a sheen.
Playful construction
The main focal point of these images would be the creative objects inserted into the scenes such as the china squirrel hidden amongst the plant. Shapes can be seen in the form of the circular leaves riddling the image. Colour and texture has been used to advance the effects of the construction. The shiny dark china squirrel is highlighted by its colour and texture. The surrounding of the squirrel are bright green and are rough. This image invokes the feeling of happiness due to its association with the outdoors or nature. The viewers attention is drawn to the central squirrel because it appears out of place mainly due to its texture. The location of the plant has been chosen to act as an environment for the squirrel in this playful construction. Natural light has been used in order to increase the brightness of the green leaves further adding enthesis to the theme of nature.
